Starting in late January, four of our second and third graders began a small-group “book club” focusing on the story “Snake and Lizard” by Joy Cowley and Gavin Bishop. We began our group by examining the front and back covers, book jacket, and illustrations to practice making predictions which will be revisited later. We have also practiced sequencing events, recalling information, and making connections between different events in the story.

In Book Club, we have also been engaging in fun activities where Snake and Lizard come to life! These include receiving letters written by our reptilian friends where students had to help them with a challenge by recalling information from our assigned reading and practicing letter-writing skills. Students are extremely enthusiastic and engaged with this story while practicing their independence through being responsible for budgeting their own time and completing the assigned readings every week.
