During the fall of 2025, the older students at school have been studying the microworld. We started learning about Antonie van Leeuwenhoek who made the first single lens microscope in the 1670s. We then made our own magnifying glasses out of water bottles filled with water. We quickly learned that the magnifying glasses made of glass are much easier to use! As we started to explore the microworld, we looked at small critters with our magnifying glasses and recorded what we found. We’ve checked out mealworms, earthworms, grasshoppers and sea stars. After each lesson, students are asked questions about what they learned and to answer those questions in complete sentences. Everyone is working on doing this correctly. We are reading about Robert Hooke and the next step in our class will be using microscopes to look at even smaller objects and observe some plant and animal cells.
