Art Studio continues to be a favorite place for our kindergarten, first, and second grade students. We have continued with the studio format where students can choose their materials alternating with some classes that introduce an art form, project, or material. On choice days, students can choose from watercolor paints using a variety of techniques, tempera painting, clay, collage with paper and glue, fingerpaints with monoprinting, drawing, coloring, and simple printmaking. This allows students to choose based on developmental level, interests, and the desire to repeat techniques until mastery. It also allows students to work on a project for multiple days. On the other days we have done collage projects, color mixing, sculpture building with clay and using wooden skewers ,air dry clay building, and studies of borders and patterns. We explored collograph printing as part of our Valentine’s Day art. Shortly after that, we did a study of bees. As we were reading about bees, a student pointed out that the artwork was made by using prints. We used this idea to create a project where our drawings were transferred onto styrofoam and printed with black ink.
