In spring of 2025, students in the younger grades met once a week and focused on making predictions and articulating the theme of each story. A book by Stephen Kellogg was read and connections and predictions were made, while discussions were had about the topic of the story. After each story, we went back to the predictions made and provided evidence for if they came true. Then students articulated the theme of the book. After reading the second book, students came up with the theme and then we compared it to the previous books’ themes. Students came up with the common themes of: friendship, kindness, humor and sharing. Students also noticed that Stephen Kellogg always used animals in his stories.
